Match Report 1st XI Vs Pakistani Express 21st May 2011.
Express won the toss & put Barrow in on what was a spicy pitch, Skusie &
Chris opening did a great job putting on 40 odd @ 4 an over to set a solid
platform. Mick(32) & Stu carried this on & the game was evenly poised at
with Barrow at 130-4 from 28 when their keeper got a sickening blow to the
face. On behalf of everyone at Barrow we hope his injury is not too serious
& wish him a speedy recovery.
Phil(40) & Stu took the attack to Express on the resumption putting on 95,
with a mixture of strong hitting, well judged singles & some exhausting
2's & 3's, mostly off overthrows as the opposition looked in disarray.
When Stu was eventually dismissed for 85 they rallied a bit but a score of
235-7 felt like a pretty decent total.
We had a quick tea break, to try & make up for the earlier delay. I
appreciate that not all clubs are blessed with the facilities that we have
at Barrow but to be charged £35 for the tea that was served up that had
been sweating in the back of a car all afternoon was something of a shock!
When we started their innings we also realised that they intended to play
with only one ball (note to self & other skippers to confirm this at the
toss, I wonder what they would have done if we had batted 2nd ?). Although
this nullified Ed somewhat it actually played into our hands because I had
an inkling from the start that our spinners would be best suited to the
wicket & the way they bat. So it proved with Gabe 1-35, Mick 2-23 & Glaz
3-26 leading us to victory. As Stu pointed out, during another good day
behind the stumps, they did not have a 'scooby do' against the turning
ball.
The highlights of our bowling performance were a sensational reflex caught
& bowled from Mick & Glaz bowling their skipper with a big turning leg
break as he came charging down the wicket, the over after we felt certain
we had had him caught behind! The guys kept their heads & did not get
frustrated by the lack of decisions that we knew at the start of play we
would not get & caught superbly, holding onto everything.
3 maximum point wins out of 3 is a great start to the season & the team
is playing really well with everyone making contributions. Next week we
welcome the in form St George to Barrow & we can all look forward to a
cup of tea & a shower - simple pleasures !
We are without Milts next week who is on his stag do & the book is open as
to what state he will be in & what garb his stag party will have him
dressed in by the time we finish the game. Through the delights of
Facebook I hope to be able to post a couple of accompanying photos with
next weeks report!
Well done guys on another good win
